MSC fishery certification for our Mackerel (PDF)
Mackerel is a fast and beautiful swimmer.
These fish are among the easiest to identify with their bobbin-shaped body and two back fins. They are brightly-coloured, beautiful fish with a pearly belly. The back is grass-green to blue patches with black stripes. A mackerel weighs about 0.5 kg in our water.
Mackerel is a seasonal fish. During spring and summer it is usually found in Skagerak, Kattegatt and Öresund. Occasionally it is seen in the Baltic Sea. In the autumn it moves to deeper waters in the west of the North Sea or to the channel west of the British Isles.
Mackerel has no swim bladder and it has to stay on the move. It lives in shoals. In Kattegatt and Skagerak the mackerel spawn during June -July. They then stay put and eat their fill of small herrings before swimming over to the north-west part of the North Sea for the winter.
The fish is rich in fat, protein and vitamins. Mackerel tastes best from spring to autumn. We buy it in the autumn when the fat content is perfect for smoking.
